Registering a domain name typically costs $35.00 per year per name.  This is not a hosting fee.  This is an Internic registration fee that guarantees your right to use the domain name for the period you sign up for.  This fee is not paid to us and is separate from any hosting fees regardless of where you host your site.  You can register a domain name for as little as 1 year or as many as 10 years.

There are many top level domains to choose from.  .com, .net, .org, .cc, .ws, .tv, .biz, .info, .name, .us, and many others.  If your name is not available with .com, it might be available with .net or dot something else.  Otherwise a small variant of www.yourname.com might be www.your-name.com.
